I mean the acronyms alone could make you crazy, SEO, PPC, CPA, CPM, Co-Reg, Conv and then terms like Bounce Rate or Optimization, Landing Pages. It almost as bad as getting an unassembled BBQ grill with no instructions.
Well I have been in the Internet since 1994. I know in Internet Dinosaur years I am like 120 years old now. I have watched this great technology that Al Gore gave us in his infamous speech grow exponentially, faster then virtually anyone ever thought possible. I used to teach courses about the Internet people didn’t even know what e-mail was now nobody can live with out it.
I was fortunate in that I wasn’t 100% techie when I got in the industry. Although I had been programming since I was 16 years old I was a Advertising and Marketing guy first and foremost. I just always loved technology, so when the Internet came along it was a natural for me to get into it. However, I have always looked at the Internet as a tool for marketing and advertising, but today it is so much more.
There is no other medium in the world like it. It has the best of all the marketing tools and techniques wrapped into one package. Albeit this package is often times a little messy. Now that social media and broadcast media are beginning to take the forefront of the most popular information supplied on the Internet almost no one can keep up with everything available on the Internet. Even the best of the best on the Internet have to keep reinventing themselves to keep up with the changes. Look Amazon.com is actually a web site that is behind in many of these technologies and everyone always looks at them as a leader.
And the scary part is that the Internet is not done growing and changing. So we get back to the same question we started with “How do you keep up?” Well, I have surmised through experimenting with many of the latest technologies that it is less important to keep up as much as it is important that you use each technology right the first time. It is easy to get distracted with all of the exciting technology but if you do not implement it correctly it can cost you valuable time, money and customers.
My specialty has always been to find the quickest path between points. I have made a lot of mistakes along the way to get there but I am persistent and a perfectionist almost to a fault and I am always looking for the most effective and efficient way to get things done.
